When students are seen as partners instead of recipients in service learning, this method can foster Meaningful Student Involvement when it is focused on transforming education.
Service learning, which infuses classroom learning with meeting real community needs, can be ideal. Working with adults as partners, students must identify challenges, research the issues, identify and create strategies, facilitate action, and infuse reflection throughout activities. (Fletcher, 2004) Some approaches position students in each strategy for Meaningful Student Involvement, while others focus on enhanced Student/Adult Partnerships through service. Whichever way it goes, its important for activities for focus on school improvement.
