Small Schools and Meaningful Student Involvement

Small schools are an innovative, engaging approach to school improvement. At their core, Meaningful Student Involvement can empower small schools to transform learning, teaching and leadership.

In large schools, the intention of small schools was to transform isolated environments into community-center, personal interaction-driven opportunities for every student to succeed. Focused on individual roles for learners, research has continually shown that small schools boost student engagement in academic and extracurricular activities. Ultimately, teachers report that they also enable teachers to really know their students. Students are at the center of small schools, ultimately giving them more responsibility in decision-making and stronger relationships between schools, communities, parents and students.
